In 2009, the first small Medieval Games was held. The event was at Desert Marigold in Phoenix. The class was joined for part of the event by the students of Tucson Waldorf.
Dames Deana & Heidrun worked together to found and form the Medieval Games. The event was held at Desert Marigold for many years. Dame Laura held an active roll since the beginning. The next year the whole, 2 day event was officially opened to all the 6th grade Waldorf students in Arizona.
Over the next few years, we saw several changes. The event grew from 2 days with a couple of schools participating. Our schedule expanded to Wednesday to Saturday to accommodate the richness of the program . We generally have 5 or 6 classes participating.
In the early years the students engaged in a quest night. The quest gave way to the vigil night that we now observe. Eventually, all 6 schools participated in this beloved rite passage. Our friends from the Court recognized a change of the crown for several years and then we choose to have one King for the Medieval Games. King Gaetano has been our reigning crown ever since.
As the event grew so did the team. In 2014, Dame Colleen became the official chef of the Games. Sir Luis and Sir David joined a few years later.
In 2021, our team decided that our days at Desert Marigold had come to an end and we would start a new chapter for the Medieval Games.
Our next chapter found us gathering in northern Arizona in May 2022. The reunion of our team, members of the Court, teachers, students, and parents was met with great enthusiasm. A few things were new. The fundamentals of this rite of passage have endured.
